The Division of Group Counseling and Group Therapy (DGCGT),China Association of Mental Health presents an opportunity for persons who are interested in learning to consult to small study groups in the group relations  model.  This psychodynamically-rooted model for understanding groups and organizations focuses on discovering and analyzing unconscious process at the group-as-a-whole level and learning from here-and-now experiences.  DGCGT having hosted two successful group relations conferences in recent years, is offering this event to provide training for those who are interested in learning to consult at such conferences.

Goals of Event:  

1) To provide participants (group 1 who have already received basic training in small study group consultation) advanced training in consulting to small study groups in group relations conferences.

2) To provide participants (group 2 who have not received previous training) the experience of small study group membership and the opportunity to learn more about group dynamics.

Learning Objectives:

Participants in group 1 will:

-          Review key concepts underlying group relations work

-          Review the essential elements of a group relations conference (GRC)

-          Understand the role of the consultant at a GRC, particularly that of a consultant to a small study group from the perspective of the behavior of the group as a whole

-          Appreciate the competencies required of a group relations consultant

-          Gain experience in co-consulting to a small study group

-          Receive supervision from more experienced consultants.

Participants in group 2 will:

-          Learn key concepts underlying group relations work

-          Learn the essential elements of a group relations conference (GRC)

-          Learn from experience as a member in a small study group, focusing on authority and leadership.

Participants/Eligibility: 

-          Participants in group 1 must have participated in the small study group consultation training in March 2017.

-          Participants in group 2 may have limited or no prior group relations conference experience, but show interest in group and organizational dynamics

Working Language: English and Mandarin

Training Components: 

-          Phase 1: online courses for group1 and group2.

For group1:

1) Tavistock Primer II, co-taught by Leigh and Kathleen

2) Small Group Consultation Seminar Using Training Videos, taught by Leigh

For group2:

1) Introduction to Group Relations (in English), co-taught by Seth Harkins, EdD and Evangeline Sarda, JD

2) Introduction to Group Relations (in English and Mandarin), co-taught by Daniel Ming-hui Hsu, PhD and Barney Straus, LCSW,

3) Group Relations and Psychoanalysis (in English), co-taught by Robert Tittman, MD and Lori Schweikert, MD,

4) Cultural Issues in Group Relations (in English), co-taught by Raymond Bakaitis, PhD and Isabelle Reiniger, LCSW,

-          Phase 2: The core of the training during the face to face event in November will be experiential as participants in group 1 will practice consulting to a small study group, and participants in group 2 will learn as members of a small study group.

Schedule of Training:

-          Friday (5:30-9pm) – Plenary opening and discussion; small study group experience

-          Saturday (9am-6pm) – Co-consultation practice/small study group membership; role analysis

-          Sunday (9am-4pm) – Co-consultation practice/small study group membership; role analysis; plenary closing and review.

Space is limited to a maximum of 15 participants for group 1 and 20 for group 2.

Fee:  3600 RMB

Dr. Hsu was trained at New York University, and has served as a consultant in group relations conferences in New York, London, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Israel.
